Full Moons

I think one thing I love about the night sky is that it's constantly changing.  You can look up one night and the moon is barely a sliver of a crescent.  Then the next thing you know you look up and the moon is full.  It's just always interesting to scope out the night sky.  This month you can enjoy the full Worm Moon and you'll be happy to know it is the first official full moon of spring.

The First Full Moon of Spring

The first full moon of Spring will be the full Worm Moon (more on that weird name in just a minute).  According to Time and Date, spring officially begins on March 19th, and this moon happens to fall after the 19th making it the first official full moon of the spring season.  Hey, warmer days are ahead!

The Full Worm Moon

One interesting thing about March's full moon is its name.  March's full moon is called the Worm Moon.  But why is that?  Well according to Almanac it was believed that the Worm Moon got its name because that's when the worms would emerge and Robins and other birds would begin appearing again to feed on them.

However, there's another reason this particular moon is called the Worm Moon.

However, more research revealed another explanation. In the 1760s, Captain Jonathan Carver visited the Naudowessie (Dakota) and other Native American tribes and wrote that the name Worm Moon refers to a different sort of “worm”—beetle larvae—which begin to emerge from the thawing bark of trees and other winter hideouts at this time.

So when can you see the full Worm Moon?

According to Space, the Worm Moon will peak in the middle of the night on March 25th but will appear full to the naked eye the evening before.

The next full moon will be on Monday, March 25 at 3:00 a.m. EST (0700 GMT), but the moon will still appear full the night before and after its peak to the casual stargazer.
