You will see a lot of law enforcement officers throughout Indiana just waiting for speeders to pass by. There's one map that shows Indiana really is just one big speed trap.

Indiana is known as "The Crossroads of America," mainly because the city of Indianapolis is the hub for several major Interstate highways that crisscross the state, connecting Hoosiers to the rest of the United States. Recently, the state of Indiana was named one of the best states in the entire country to drive in. That being said, we've all seen some careless drivers along Indiana roadways. For some, it's almost a daily occurrence. You know what kind of drivers I am talking about, careless drivers weaving in and out of traffic, distracted drivers, speeders, the list goes on and on. This is especially true with speeders. You know what I'm talking about. The ones who are flying down the road, weaving in and out of traffic, without a care in the world. Well, it's those drivers that have caused Indiana to be one big speed trap.

We all know of areas throughout Indiana where you don't want to risk speeding because police are usually posted up somewhere along that stretch of road just waiting for a speeder. I saw this interesting map on Reddit that shows where you're most likely to get a speeding ticket in the United States. According to Brilliant Maps, this is how the data was found:

I matched up FIP data to get the county, state and city. Remember, all counties and cities publish their budget including income. The format took me a while to map out but they did provide a key to the data. It would be something like 01000022608519T 3132432021R First two characters is FIPS state code, one character level of estimate code, 3 character for item code, amount 5-7…. Population density came from my purchased zip code database and some others that list out city data with population. Not too difficult if you are use to working with such data.

When it comes to the map, you will notice that the ENTIRE state of Indiana is covered in blue. That represents where the most speeding tickets are given out. Apparently, there are a lot of tickets dished out to Indiana drivers. That's especially true in northern Indiana near Chicago.

I tried to look up how many speeding tickets were issued in Indiana last year, just out of curiosity. However, I couldn't find that answer online. However, I do know that we aren't among the top ten states who issue the most speeding tickets. So that's at least somewhat comforting. That being said, I'm not blaming the law enforcement officers for these "speed traps," if there weren't so many careless drivers out there in Indiana, there wouldn't be a need for them. But does any of this information surprise you?

SEE: 35 Personalized License Plates the Indiana BMV Rejected

According to the BMV, personalized plate requests may be rejected if they contain the following, let's call them "red flags:"

  • Carries a meaning or connotation offensive to good taste and decency;
  • Would be misleading; or
  • The BMV otherwise considers improper for issuance.

There's no doubt each and every one of these violates one of those provisions, and most of them violate them all.
