This year has undeniably been challenging for the restaurant industry. Many major chains, like Red Lobster, have been closing locations due to bankruptcy filings, sparking concerns about which brands might be next. Whether it’s due to inflation or a drop in customer demand, it appears another name is now joining the growing list of closures.
Buca di Beppo Declares Bankruptcy
According to CBS News, Buca di Beppo filed for bankruptcy protection citing a decline in customer visits in recent years. Known for their family-dining atmosphere, the chain has been around since 1993 serving up classic Italian cuisine like meatballs, salads, pastas, pizzas, and more. The chain was started in the basement of a Minneapolis apartment building, which is where the name comes from, as “Buca di Beppo” roughly translates to “Joe’s small place” in Italian.
CBS News reported Buca di Beppo enters Chapter 11 bankruptcy with more than $10 million in debt. The restaurant chain noted that about $1.36 million of that debt includes gift cards that customers haven't redeemed. In light of this, the chain is set to close 18 of its restaurants across the United States, leaving about 44 still in operation.
Buca di Beppo Closes Indy Location
Buca di Beppo has officially announced their list of closures, and one of those is located right here in Hooiser State. The restaurant in question, located at 6045 East 86th Street in Indianapolis, Indiana, is one of only two Midwest closures, with the other being in Ohio. Most of the shutdowns seem to be happening out west in states like California, Arizona, and Colorado, according to CBS.
While only time will tell if more closures can be expected down the road, there will still be plenty of Buca di Beppo locales throughout the U.S. for folks to enjoy. In fact, Hoosiers can still get their fill of Italian cuisine at 659 US 31 S. in Greenwood, Indiana, as that particular restaurant is slated to remain open.
