I've personally never liked living in metropolitan areas. While closer to shopping, food, and other amenities, it's just never been my cup of tea. Rather, I prefer living in a quiet rural setting where I can host bonfires and enjoy target practice without disturbing nearby neighbors or violating a city ordinance. When I did live in a city, I also had to be much more mindful of crime. In fact, while living in an apartment in Clarksville, Tennessee, I had over $200 in Amazon packages stolen from my front porch in broad daylight. I've never had that issue in the country.
While I prefer country living, I realize there are many who prefer the opposite, and that's totally fine. The city in general is not bad by any means, and there are certainly plenty of solid reasons why one would choose city life over rural life. Indiana has an assortment of beautiful metro areas to call home, offering better access to public transportation, healthcare, and shopping than its rural counterparts. In fact, several Indiana cities are now highly sought after by folks looking to buy a home and settle down in the Hoosier State.
Redfin has a compiled a list of the top 10 metros in Indiana with the fastest growing sales prices. Some of these were a bit of a surprise to me, but others made total sense. The most sought after homes in Indiana seem to be in Michigan City, which is located on the south shore of Lake Michigan. Home prices in this city are now up over 67% in 2024. According to the 2020 census, Michigan City has a population of 32,075.
Michigan City is known for its stellar beaches, festivals, and historical sites, so it makes sense that it would find itself on this list. However, also on this list was Gary, Indiana, with home prices up 22.3%, which was a surprise to me given the city's reputation and crime. Another city I was surprised to see on this list was Bedford, which has a population of just 13,792. According to Redfin, housing prices in Bedford are up 13.4%. Here is the full list:
- Michigan City, IN (up 61.7%)
- Marion, IN (up 29.4%)
- Greenfield, IN (up 25.9%)
- Seymour, IN (up 23.6%)
- Gary, IN (up 22.3%)
- Kokomo, IN (up 20.0%)
