Secret Chicago Tunnels Discovered by Urban Explorers
Have you ever wondered what's beneath the streets of Chicago, Illinois? Are you brave enough to look? Recently, some urban explorers dared to duck beneath the streets and were stunned at what they found - steam tunnels everywhere.
First, a disclaimer. I'm not certain, but I'm pretty sure these guys/girls/people were NOT supposed to be doing this. Lord Explores on Facebook just dropped this reel showing their exploration after ducking into a manhole in Chicago. Let me repeat: DO NOT DO THIS - EVER. Thanks. That being said, what they found was very interesting so here is their video.
Here are some highlights from their exploration. The narrow confines under the streets of Chicago are beyond intimidating.
Pro Tip: Don't get too close to hot things like steam pipes. You're welcome.
If you're underground Chicago in a scary place, go through any door that says exit.
What are these tunnels under Chicago?
Years ago, Chicago Detours did a deep dive into the forgotten steam and freight tunnels under Chicago. Highly recommend their research as it's some very interesting Windy City history. There are also some juicy stories about what the mob did with the Chicago underground during their heyday that is very entertaining (and frightening).
To emphasize again, do not do this if you have the chance. I don't know that this team of urban explorers broke the law, but I would not be surprised if some no trespassing signs were missed. These types of explorations are dangerous even on a good day. Doing this at night under Chicago is terrifying.
WARNING: Under no circumstances should you enter this property. By doing so you risk bodily harm and/or prosecution for trespassing on private property.
