
Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Indiana, Illinois Eggs Causes Illness in Kentucky
A Salmonella outbreak tied to eggs distributed in Indiana and Illinois has been linked to one death and over 130 illnesses in ten states, including Kentucky.
Egg Recall Impacts Indiana and Illinois Stores
More than 20 million eggs have been recalled by August Egg Company of Hilmar, California, due to potential Salmonella contamination. The brown cage-free and brown certified organic eggs were distributed to several retailers, including Walmart stores across Indiana and Illinois, as well as seven additional states.
Which Eggs Are Recalled?
According to the initial recall shared by the Food and Drug Administration in early June, the eggs are marked with Sell By Dates ranging between March 4, 2025, and June 19, 2025. The recalled eggs have plant code P6562 or CA5330 printed on the carton or package, and are also marked with the Julian Dates between 32 to 126.

In the most recent update from the FDA released on July 10, 2025, they say that 134 people in ten states, including Kentucky, have fallen ill, resulting in 38 hospitalizations and one death. However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says those numbers are likely higher.
The true number of sick people in this outbreak was likely much higher than the number reported, and this outbreak may not have been limited to the states with known illnesses. This is because many people recover without medical care and are not tested for Salmonella. - CDC
How Dangerous Is Salmonella?
Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause severe infections, particularly in the elderly, young children, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Even individuals who are otherwise healthy may experience symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (which can be bloody), fever, and abdominal pain if exposed to Salmonella.

According to the CDC, symptoms can begin anywhere from six hours to six days after exposure to the bacteria, and, in rare cases, the bacteria can even spread to the bloodstream, causing more life-threatening conditions like arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis. However, typical symptoms of Salmonella infection generally resolve in four to seven days.
The Food and Drug Administration explains that Salmonella can be spread in several ways. Consuming undercooked food, improper food handling, and inadequate hand washing are the most frequent causes of Salmonella spread.
Salmonella are a group of bacteria that can cause gastrointestinal illness and fever called salmonellosis. Salmonella can be spread by food handlers who do not wash their hands and/or the surfaces and tools they use between food preparation steps, and when people eat raw or undercooked foods. Salmonella can also spread from animals to people. People who have direct contact with certain animals, including poultry and reptiles, can spread the bacteria from the animals to food if they do not practice proper hand washing hygiene before handling food. Pets can also spread the bacteria within the home environment if they eat food contaminated with Salmonella. - FDA

Additionally, consumers who may have eggs included in the recall should return the product to the place of purchase for a refund.
