Reduce Your Speed on the Water

If you plan to go boating, it is crucial to understand the rules and practice safe boating techniques. Reduce your speed in unfamiliar areas and remain alert for any unusual water conditions based on the size and type of your boat. These precautions not only ensure safety but also protect the environment by preventing beach erosion. Before setting out on your boat, assess the water levels and maintain an appropriate speed throughout your journey.

Don't Drink & Boat

Assign a designated boat operator who abstains from alcohol. Alcohol impairs balance, vision, coordination, judgment, and reaction time. The effects of alcohol can be intensified by wave action, sun exposure, and wind. Operating a motorboat or personal watercraft in Indiana while intoxicated, defined as having a blood alcohol level of 0.08% or higher, is against the law.

Make Sure Everyone Onboard Has a Life Jacket

Ensure that every life jacket you use is approved by the United States Coast Guard, in good working condition, and the appropriate size for the wearer. Modern life jackets are designed to be lighter, less obstructive, and more comfortable than older models. Inflatable life jackets offer mobility and flexibility for activities like boating, fishing, or paddling, and they are often more comfortable in warm weather.
