You know when your phone dings and you think it's a text from a friend, so you get excited? Well, that's fun and all, until you open your phone to realize, it's a scammer texting you!
Indiana Department of Workforce Development Text Scam Hits the Tri-State
A new scam has officially hit the Tri-State, where the text looks like it comes from the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, but it's actually just phishing to get your information. Kat recently had this text hit her phone:
The text reads:
INDIANA DEPARTMENT OF WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT: Your Back2Work deposit of 5,800.00 is no available, click on (link) to recieve payment
Luckily Kat knew instantly it was a scam, but some may not realize it as quickly, so it's important to spread awareness.
Indiana Department of Workforce Development Won't Text You Money
After checking IN.gov, the Indiana Department of Workforce Development seems to be aware of this particular scam. They put out a statement saying:
DWD WILL NOT send claimants a text message
As a reminder, DWD WILL NOT send claimants a text message. If you receive a text from someone claiming to be us, do NOT click on the link. Clicking the link could give fraudsters access to information on your phone which could then allow them to take over your UI account.
Be Aware of ID.me Fraudulent Messages
Please be aware of a new scam where fraudsters attempt to impersonate ID.me. ID.me ONLY operates through the ID.me website. Websites like “your-id-me.com” or other derivatives ARE NOT connected to ID.me. ID.me will not ask for personal information via messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, or Facebook Messenger.
To report fraudulent messages, please email the DWD Contact Center: AskUIContactCenter@dwd.in.gov. For other fraud reporting information visit our fraud page.
Kat followed those steps and reported her fraud text.
If you get any text (or email for that matter) from a number or email address that you don't know, it's best to ignore it, and do not click or tap on any links that are sent to you from sources that you don't know.
