There are certain things you probably think about before heading out for a hike. What shoes should I wear? Do I have enough water? Did I remember the bug spray?

But there's another question worth considering before you find yourself out on the trail, miles away from the nearest bathroom:

What happens when nature calls while you're in nature?

The U.S. Forest Service recently shared some surprisingly useful advice for anyone hiking, camping, or otherwise spending time in places where restroom facilities aren't available.

And yes, we're talking about poop.

How to Properly Poop in the Woods

According to the U.S. Forest Service, properly disposing of human waste is an important part of keeping our national forests and grasslands clean and enjoyable for everyone.

If you find yourself needing to go, the Forest Service recommends getting at least 200 feet (about 70 steps) away from water sources, trails, parking areas, and campsites.

Next, they say you should choose a sunny spot with rich soil that's free from roots and large rocks. Sunlight and soil help waste decompose more quickly.

Using a trowel, stick, or rock, dig a hole approximately 4 to 6 inches wide and 6 to 8 inches deep.

Then... well, you know what happens next.

When you're finished, fill the hole with dirt and leaves and pack it down tightly.

Don't Bury Your Wipes

There is one more important step.

Pack out your toilet paper and wipes.

The Forest Service recommends putting used paper or wipes in a plastic bag and taking them with you instead of leaving them behind.

It may not be the most glamorous outdoor skill you'll ever learn, but knowing what to do before you're standing in the middle of the woods frantically Googling it seems like a pretty solid plan.

Because sometimes when nature calls, she doesn't particularly care how far you are from the nearest bathroom.
