Before we get into the details of this jail for sale, I have to address the obvious (at least, to me) similarities this prison shares with the prison used during episodes of The Walking Dead. I’m not crazy, am I? The inside of this prison does resemble the inside of that prison, doesn’t it? I’m not saying they are carbon copies, but they do share a certain aesthetic. Here is a (long) clip from The Walking Dead for the sake of comparison.

The whole Walking Dead connection really has nothing to do with this prison being for sale, it’s just the first thing I thought of when I saw the interior. Now, on to THIS prison – here is what we know…

The former Cass County Missouri Law Enforcement Center and Detention Center/Jail is for sale in Harrisonville, MO. With over 10,000 square feet (5,300 square feet of office space) and features 34 cells with toilets and sinks in three cell blocks. $195,000.

My first thought was that it seems like a pretty decent price for that much space, until you see the space, and think about how much work it will take to make it livable. I can’t imagine how much a project like that would cost.

What Do You Do With a Former Jail?

You're the proud new owner of an old jail - now what? That decision depends on a few factors, including its location, condition, size, and zoning regulations. Here are some potential options to consider:

  • Convert it into a museum or tourist attraction
  • Repurpose it as commercial or residential space
  • Use it for storage or warehousing
  • Explore community use options
