In an effort to provide total care to patients undergoing treatment for breast cancer, the Evansville affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation is going above and beyond the standard fundraising to help find a cure. They've recently launched a new Direct Services Program designed to help take the burden of expenses off the patient's plate while they work to fight the disease. And they're the only Komen affiliate in the country doing it.

Community Services Manager, Cheryl Voight joined us in studio Wednesday for our monthly chat about everything Komen and shared the details of the program. Cheryl said the Evansville affiliate is the only affiliate offering the program because it was their idea. After coming up with the concept, they presented it to Komen headquarters during a recent meeting in Dallas, and were given the green light to try it out.

The program provides up to $250 per month for six months to patients actively in treatment who are struggling to cover everyday costs due to that treatment. As Cheryl notes in our interview below, the money patients receive can be used to help cover a utility bill, groceries, the cost of gas to get to and from appointments, or other transportation options such as Uber Health.

If you or someone you know is currently in treatment and could use the program's assistance, you can simply speak to your "Nurse Navigator" and they will get you the paperwork you need. You can also reach out to the Evansville Komen office directly at
