Evansville Police Mourn the Loss of Retired K9 Doc
The Evansville Police Department is mourning the loss of one of its own.
Retired EPD K9 Doc passed away peacefully in his bed at home, surrounded by the family who loved him.
Doc served the Evansville community for nearly a decade before retiring in 2024. Still, the numbers only tell part of the story of the dog who became a trusted partner, protector, and beloved member of both the EPD family and his family at home.

K9 Doc Began His Career in 2016
Doc joined the Evansville Police Department in 2016, when he was partnered with Officer John Montgomery.
During his career, Doc recorded 33 apprehensions and 100 surrenders. He helped locate 100 pounds of marijuana and 42 pounds of methamphetamine, along with more than $100,000 in cash.
He also earned several awards from the United States Police Canine Association during his years of service.
Doc came to EPD through the Evansville Police Foundation with sponsorship from Sonitrol of Evansville, which helped fund his purchase and begin what would become years of service to the community.

Retirement Was Good to Doc
When Doc retired in 2024, he traded police work for a considerably more relaxed schedule with Montgomery and his family.
Doc took trips to Lake Barkley, enjoyed plenty of time at home, and had a particularly important new assignment: riding along to pick up his siblings in the car line at school.
He got to spend his retirement not as K9 Doc, but simply as Doc.
A dog home with his people.
The Evansville Police Department said Doc's working days may have ended, but he never stopped being a hero.
Rest easy, Doc. Thank you for your service.
