These Veterans Are Finally Getting The Welcome They Deserve
A powerful homecoming is coming to Evansville this spring, and the community is being invited to help make sure local veterans receive the welcome they deserve.
Honor Flight of Southern Indiana is preparing for its next flight, bringing a group of U.S. veterans back home after a trip to Washington, D.C., to visit the memorials built in their honor. The flight, known as EVV20, is scheduled to return to the Evansville Regional Airport on Saturday, May 2, 2026.
Many of these veterans never received the hero’s welcome they deserved when they returned from service decades ago. Organizers say this event is a chance for the community to help change that.

Evansville Invited To Welcome Veterans Home
The public is encouraged to attend a Welcome Home Parade celebrating the veterans' return.
According to organizers, the flight is expected to arrive at the airport around 7:45 p.m. Central Time, with the parade beginning at approximately 8:30 p.m.
Community members are encouraged to bring American flags, signs, and banners to help create a memorable welcome for the veterans. Event parking will be available at Anchor Industries, with buses transporting guests to the airport beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Write A Letter Through Operation Mail Call
The organization is also asking the public to help with a meaningful project called Operation Mail Call.
Community members are invited to write thank-you letters or cards to veterans that will be distributed during the flight. The letters help create a deeply personal moment when veterans receive messages of gratitude from people across the Tri-State.
Letters can be simple notes of appreciation, drawings from children, or longer messages expressing gratitude for their service. Organizers say the letters should be left unsealed to make them easier for veterans to open.
Mail Call submissions can be dropped off at multiple locations across the region between April 1 and April 22, with collection boxes gathered on April 24.
Donations Needed For The Upcoming Flight
Honor Flight organizers are also asking for community donations to help prepare care packages for the veterans traveling on EVV20.
Items requested include snacks, candy bars, trail mix, cookies, crackers, hand sanitizer, and travel-size wet wipes.
Organizers estimate the flight will include approximately 90 veterans and 90 guardians, making community support especially important.
More information about letter drop-off locations, donation sites, and the welcome home celebration can be found through Honor Flight of Southern Indiana.
