I thought homework was tough when I was in school. Now I try to help my kids with their homework, and it makes me think I had it pretty easy. With the evolution of teaching methods designed to get kids thinking differently then we were taught about solving problems (hello, new math), it can be tough for us parents to help our kids with their assignments when we struggle to grasp it ourselves. Fortunately, there are people out there who do understand it, and can help.

The Ascension-St. Vincent YMCA in downtown Evansville has teamed up with students at Signature School to offer free tutoring assistance to students in 1st through 8th grade who are struggling with any number of subjects. Personally, I think the idea of students helping students is a great idea since the Signature School tutors will likely be able to relate to kids they're tutoring better than us lame adults (probably because we use words like "lame").

The tutoring sessions are available on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. now through December 11th. Reservations must be made daily so the Y knows how many tutors they'll need each day. You can get your child signed up by calling the Y at 812-492-6730. You can also use that number to ask any questions you may have about the service, or you can e-mail enrichment@ymcaswin.org with any questions.
