Do You Miss “Thunder On The Ohio? The River City Racing Club’s “Spring Shootout!” Is Saturday
This Saturday is an event that has been going on as long as I can remember, or for as long as the lake these boats race on has been in existence. It's the River City Racing Club's annual "Spring Shootout!" These Remote Control model watercraft, designed to mirror the hydroplane craft that used to race on the river during "Thunder On The Ohio", are only a fraction of the size of their big brothers, many boats are about 1/8 scale of an unlimited hydroplane. These boats race on the lake at Eagle Crest Lake located at 8200 E Walnut St, right behind Cracker Barrel.
These model scale boats compete in many different classes, with some of these craft racing at speeds anywhere from 30 mph to 80 mph. This is serious racing! Just look at some of the boats from the River City Racing Club's Facebook page.
Pretty awesome model replicas of the hydroplanes local folk used to clamor to the banks of the Ohio to watch. As that sport continues to fade, the popularity of the model boats have only increased. There's no admission and no provided seating for this Saturday's Spring Shootout. Bring your own lawn chair or blanket and enjoy this cool event as I have on many occasions.
The River City Racing Club's "Spring Shootout!" goes on from 9am to 5pm this Saturday. Even more info can be found here.
