Reckless Driving Arrest Follows Near Miss In Indiana Work Zone
Deputies with the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office have made an arrest following a reckless driving incident that nearly injured construction workers on Darmstadt Road.
What Deputies Say Happened In The Darmstadt Road Work Zone
According to a press release from the sheriff’s office, deputies were called to a road construction zone in the 12500 block of Darmstadt Road on December 12 after multiple reports of a reckless driver. Construction workers told deputies that traffic had been stopped when a silver Chevrolet Camaro ignored a flagger’s stop sign, drove around the flagger, and struck the sign with the front bumper of the vehicle.
How Fast The Vehicle Was Traveling Through The Construction Area
After hitting the sign, the driver reportedly accelerated through the construction zone at a high rate of speed, nearly striking one of the workers on site. Witnesses estimated the vehicle was traveling approximately 70 miles per hour while passing through the active work zone.

Workers also reported that the driver rolled down the driver’s side window and yelled profanities at the construction crew while speeding away from the scene. The incident left workers shaken and prompted an immediate investigation by the sheriff’s office.
How Investigators Identified The Driver
During the investigation, detectives used the Flock Safety license plate recognition system to help identify the vehicle involved. A photographic lineup was later shown to witnesses, who positively identified the driver.
What Charges The Driver Is Now Facing
As a result of the investigation, Cynthia Waters, 56, of Evansville, was arrested. She has been charged with Criminal Recklessness with a Deadly Weapon, a Level 6 Felony.
Why Work Zone Safety Remains A Major Concern For Deputies
The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office emphasized the seriousness of reckless driving in construction zones. Work zones often include stopped traffic, reduced lanes, and workers just feet away from passing vehicles. Even one dangerous decision can result in serious injury or death.
Authorities continue to remind drivers to slow down, obey flaggers and posted signs, and use extra caution when traveling through active construction areas.
