Easy Bonnaroo Camping Hacks for a Better Weekend
A good campsite setup can honestly make or break your festival weekend.
After multiple years on the farm at Bonnaroo, I've learned that the little things matter more than people expect. When you're dealing with heat, dust, exhaustion, and limited personal space for four or five days straight, a few smart campsite upgrades can make a massive difference.
Some of these are simple. Some feel a little extra, but all of them make life easier at Bonnaroo or, really, any other camping festival.

Treat Shade Like a Survival Tool
I have said it before, and I will say it again: bring shade. This is always the first thing I tell anyone going to Bonnaroo for the first time.
Bring reliable shade.
A canopy over your main hangout space is one of the biggest quality-of-life upgrades you can make at camp. Without it, your campsite heats up fast once the sun comes out, and your tent can turn into an oven before you're ready to wake up.
The more shade you create, the better your entire weekend is going to feel.
Think About Where Your Tent Goes
A lot of first-timers just throw their tent up and call it good. I did the same thing my first time, too.
Now, I pay attention to where the morning sun is going to hit, and I try to position my tent strategically to keep from trapping heat quite as early once the sun comes up.
Even small adjustments can make a noticeable difference when you are trying to sleep past 8 am.
Keep Your Most Important Items Easy to Reach
You don't want to dig through a pile of random bags every time you need sunscreen, wipes, or a flashlight.
One of the best things I ever started doing was creating a small "grab zone" using a hanging shoe organizer. It hangs on the canopy with the essentials I use frequently. It keeps the camp from becoming complete chaos by day two.
If you're not careful, your organization can disappear at Bonnaroo faster than you may expect.
Bring More Lighting Than You Think You Need
Your campsite gets very dark at night, and after walking around for hours, the last thing you want is to be fumbling around trying to find something.
Battery-powered lanterns, string lights, or even simple clip lights can make camp way easier to navigate once the sun goes down. It also makes your campsite feel a little more comfortable and a little less like you're surviving in the wilderness.
I'm a big fan of collapsible lanterns like this one for my campsite, and clip-on lights like this one for navigating late-night trips to the port-o-potties.

Create a Spot to Sit and Recover
This sounds obvious until you realize some people barely bring seating.
Having a comfortable place to sit, cool down, eat, or just exist quietly for a little while matters more than you think during a long festival weekend.
Even something as simple as decent camping chairs and a small table can make camp feel more functional and relaxing.
Prepare Yourself for the Dust
No matter how prepared you think you are, if it's been dry in Tennessee ahead of the festival, the dust will eventually win.
A bandana or neck buff, a cooling towel, or a pashmina helps more than people realize. I also recommend keeping a bottle of saline to rinse the dust out of your nose at the end of the night, and keep baby wipes accessible, too.
You won't be able to completely avoid the dust, but you can at least make it more manageable.
Plan for Your Cooler to Become a Problem
Every Bonnaroo campsite eventually ends up dealing with melting ice and a little cooler chaos.
Keeping your cooler in the shade, limiting how often it gets opened, and organizing it well from the beginning helps way more than you might think. I also use frozen water bottles instead of relying only on loose ice to keep my cooler cold, and it's made a big difference in how long everything stays cold.
Anything you can do to make your cooler more efficient will pay off by day three.

Small Comforts Go a Long Way on the Farm
Some of the best campsite upgrades are the little things people forget about.
Portable fans. Extra socks. A battery pack. Cooling towels (I like the ones from Frogg Toggs). Trash bags. A small rug or tarp to put down to protect your feet from the rather pokey grass on the farm.
None of it feels important while you're packing, but once you're on the farm, those small comforts start feeling like luxury items.
A Smart Campsite Setup Changes Everything
At Bonnaroo, your campsite becomes your home for the weekend.
The more comfortable and functional you make it, the easier it becomes to recharge between sets and actually enjoy the experience instead of just trying to survive the heat and exhaustion.
A few thoughtful setup choices now can make the entire weekend feel smoother once you're finally on the farm. And remember: Bonnaroo is a marathon, not a sprint.
