Monstrous Bodies and Forbidden Desires in ‘Insexts’ Vol. 1 [Review]
Insexts is a comic book about monsters. Written by Marguerite Bennett and drawn by Ariela Kristantina, with colors by Bryan Valenza and Jessica Kaoline, it’s a Victorian horror tale with all the classic trappings, but it also incorporates a massive, writhing dose of body horror. It’s also queer and profoundly feminist.
In short, Insexts is doing things with horror the likes of which have never been seen in comics, or perhaps any other medium.
Diana Meets Steve As ‘Year One’ Continues In ‘Wonder Woman’ #4 [Exclusive Preview]
The Year One storyline in Wonder Woman is, at least to me, the most exciting part of Greg Rucka's return to the character. Sure, her origin has been told many times --- in fact Renae De Liz and Grant Morrison have both rewritten it just in the past year. But this take is important for two reasons: First, even though he's had a previous run on the book and is beloved by most Wonder Woman fans, this is the first time Greg Rucka has covered this ground. And secondly, this comes at a time when the ground needs to be covered. Check out an exclusive preview of issue #4!
Give ‘Em Elle: What’s An Eight-Year-Old Harley Quinn Fan To Do?
I spent the weekend visiting an old friend who has two kids in elementary school. I was at the movies with them, and we saw a trailer for Suicide Squad. Margot Robbie was on screen waving a mallet around, and I heard my friend’s eight-year-old daughter gasp and say, “That’s Harley Quinn! Mom, I wanna see that movie!”
As characters on the screen fired guns and threatened each other with knives, axes, and swords, my friend turned to her daughter and said “Sorry honey, I don’t think this is going to be a movie for kids.”
Is An All-New Wolverine Coming To ‘Wolverine 3’?
According to SuperHeroHype, a very exciting character may be making her live action debut in next year's Wolverine 3. The film focuses on a team-up between Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier, but SuperHeroHype has apparently heard (although they stress it hasn't been confirmed) that the story also introduces Laura Kinney, the young female clone of Logan who currently holds the name and costume of Wolverine in the comics.
Suffering Sappho: Women, Men, and Grant Morrison in ‘Wonder Woman: Earth One’ [Review]
Ever since creator William Moulton Marston died, those in charge of Wonder Woman have been actively running away from his version, in an attempt to make the character more acceptable by the standards of mainstream 20th Century entertainment, which hasn't historically been friendly to feminism, let alone pro-bondage quasi-queer female supremacy.
But Grant Morrison, the writer behind the new Wonder Woman: Earth One graphic novel with artist Yanick Paquette, is known as a writer who is unafraid of ideas. In discussing this project, which was in development for years, he expressed a desire to bring back some of the weirdness that only Marston brought to the character. Did he succeed?
Elsa Charretier Joins Conner and Palmiotti to Take Kori Underground in ‘Starfire’ #9 [Exclusive Preview]
This current Starfire series continues to be a ton of fun, especially considering she was perhaps the character who suffered the most damage in the 2011 New 52 reboot. Pulling her back from that disaster and rehabilitating her into someone who longtime fans can actually stand to read a comic about has been a major project, and may be a factor in her getting a solo comic in the first place.
With issue #9, that comic is getting a new artist. The Infinite Loop's Elsa Charretier joins series writers Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti for four issues, bringing a simple, fun art style that's noticeably reminiscent of Bruce Timm, the visual architect of the classic DC Animated Universe. And she can actually make a giant caterpillar look cute, which is really quite an achievement.
Cast Party: Who Should Star in a ‘New Warriors’ Movie?
Welcome to Cast Party, the feature that imagines a world with even more live action comic book adaptations than we currently have, and comes up with arguably the best casting suggestions you’re ever going to find for the movies and shows we wish could exist. This week we're going back to the '90s, to imagine a film based on a comic that's mocked almost as much as it's revered, Marvel's New Warriors, written by Fabian Nicieza, with art by Mark Bagley, Darick Robertson, and others.
David Walker and Sanford Greene Deliver Friendship and Fist Fights in ‘Power Man and Iron Fist’ #1
Sanford Greene's art is just uncommonly charming, right? That was my first thought when the earliest images were released from the upcoming Power Man and Iron Fist, and seeing this preview has only strengthened that opinion. The new ongoing series, featuring Greene and writer David Walker, will be in stores on February 17th.
