2021 Evansville More Than Pink Walk Going Virtual September 26th
The original plan for this year's Susan G. Komen Foundation's More Than Pink Walk was to return to an in-person format this year after being forced to go virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic last year. Unfortunately, as case numbers continue to increase in the area because of the Delta variant, the Foundation has made the difficult decision to keep the event virtual for the second straight year.
The Foundation released the following statement explaining the decision:
In consultation with local government and health officials, and out of an abundance of caution for the higher-risk breast cancer community, Susan G. Komen announced today that the 2021 Evansville More Than Pink Walk will no longer have an in-person option for participants, focusing instead on the events new engaging at-home experience.
This decision comes after closely monitoring local conditions in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic and the impact of the Delta Variant on this quickly changing situation. “We are excited about the one-of-a-kind, at-home program we have created for you to Walk in your neighborhood, with your team, family, and friends,” said Rachel Smith.
“We'll still count down to the Walk together with the Power of One week, starting on Monday, September 20, 2021, join us for a week of fundraising challenges, celebration and fun, leading up to our Walk on Sunday, September 26, 2021. Thank you for your commitment to our ONE vision: a world without breast cancer.”
Known for years as the Race for the Cure, the event evolved into the current More Than Pink Walk format in 2019. While much of the format remains the same; thousands gathering for the common goal of raising money to help fund research, treatment, and an eventual cure for breast cancer, as well as support services for patients currently undergoing treatment, the biggest change involved the physical aspect of the day. Gone is the 5K run/walk. It was replaced by a one-mile walk on a pre-determined course near and around Eastland Mall which invited more participation from those who may have been unable to participate in the past due to the length of the course.
Despite staying as a virtual event again this year, you and your team are still encouraged to register through the Komen website which you can do now by clicking the button below.
