Video Game Violence Bill Receives Second Life This Month

Resident Evil 6

A bill which called for the study of the effects of violent video games on children is being reintroduced later this month by its author, West Virginia Sen. Jay Rockefeller.

The original bill, which died when Congress’ 112th session ended on January 2nd, called for the Federal Trade Commission and Federal Communications Commission to team up with the National Academy of Sciences to study the deleterious effects of video games and video programming on children. The results of the study would be released to the FTC, FCC, and Congress within 18 months.

Since the 1999 Columbine High School shooting, there have been eight similar studies organized by the FTC, and none of these studies found a direct link from video game violence to violence enacted by children. Vice President Joe Biden is also seeking proposals to tackle gun violence in America, as he is meeting with members of the video game and entertainment industry to discuss the issue. In the wake of the Newton, Connecticut shootings, coupled with the continued success of action-based video games, expect this issue to remain a hot button topic in the coming weeks.
