To NFL scouts and owners, the combine is an annual gathering of college football players hoping to either gain some attention and notoriety or to simply reaffirm what the decision makers already know. To the rest of us it’s a reminder of how ridiculously athletic these guys are, and how pathetically unathletic we are.

So The Inside Joke (in case you didn’t know that’s me and my buddy Ryan O’Bryan), wanted to see how we compared to the pros in a few of the standard combine drills. So we headed over to Swonder Ice Arena to test ourselves in the 40-yard dash, the vertical jump and the broad jump.

The video evidence below is somewhat shocking – you’ve been warned. I’ll ask you to remember that we are both in our upper 30’s, both married with two young kids, and both are in no shape whatsoever. We’re both big guys too, rockin’ about 6’ 3” and a little north of 215lbs. Having said that, I don’t think we did too bad at all.

Just a quick note about our vertical jump. We realized after that fact that we didn’t calculate that correctly. So our actual numbers should be Bobby: 18 inches and Ryan: 17 inches.

Now, to give you some comparison, below are stats from Jadeveon Clowney, who will be a top-5 pick in this year’s NFL draft. This beast is 6’ 5” and 266lbs.

  • Vertical jump: 37.5 inches
  • Broad jump: 124 inches
  • 40-yard dash: 4.53 seconds
