I'm just going to start this review off by saying I wouldn't be surprised if the Suicide Squad sequel gets cancelled...

This movie was...well,...it was a movie...

It was fast paced from the start. Most movies start with the opening logos and maybe a wide angle shot of a town, or a narrator, or an introductory scene that lets you know what the plot might be. But the Suicide Squad just jumped right in. It was logo, logo, BOOM! Movie! Like, within 5 seconds of the theater's lights dimming, you're thrown into the movie.

Everything after that is very fast paced as well. Actually, no, not "fast paced"...just "fast".

To be fair, unlike movies like "The Avenger's", where we have entire movies dedicated to the introduction and origin of a character, the characters in Suicide Squad don't have their own stand-alone movies. So, a lot of their introduction had to be fast paced in the movie so that we could get to the good stuff.

Now, not to be fair, the editing and continuity was atrocious. Some scenes looked like they were just cookie cuttered in and other scenes had basic continuity errors. For example: There's a scene near the beginning with Joker and Harley Quinn (no spoilers, I promise). Now, Harley is standing behind the Joker, then the camera cuts to another guy, then back to Harley, who is now casually lounging on a sofa 10 feet behind her like she'd been there the whole time. Also, her hair and makeup had continuity flaws in some scenes as well. There is a scene where it's raining, her hair gets drenched and her makeup runs all down her face. The very next shot after this scene is of the group walking away and now her hair is miraculously dry. Then the scene after THAT her hair is curled, then not curled, then wet again. And in this scene she gets ash on her face and her make up is smudged more. The very next scene...her makeup is somewhat fixed. When does she do this??? They are fighting and walking practically the entire movie and during random points throughout this she has time to fix her lipstick? When? Where? How?

And I wasn't 100% sure on what the plot actually WAS until the END of the movie. (To be fair, I'm not even sure the Suicide Squad knew the point of their mission until the end of the movie either...but as an audience member we should be privy to such information.)

Now, here's where I break it down character-wise...

Amanda Waller: Viola Davis is amazing at everything she does and she brought Amanda from page to screen flawlessly.

Rick Flag: Okay.

Deadshot: Good, great, awesome. Will Smith did a great job and the movie spent good time establishing his character.

Harley Quinn: *sigh* Okay. I love that Harley finally got her live action debut. But Margot Robbie's accent was all over the place. Sometime's she'd have the classic Harley Boston accent and sometime's she didn't, and I guess this works for Harley since she, as a character, is all over the place. But, the problem is, I know that this wasn't a character choice on Robbie's part. I saw her in The Legend of Tarzan last month and her accent was all over the place in that too. (Also, don't waste your movie on that movie. Wait until it's at the $2 theater. The only good thing about that movie was seeing Alexander Skarsgard shirtless. And I mean the ONLY thing...)

Other than that I liked her acrobatics and her obsession with Mr. J, though there was something lacking in those Joker/Dr. Quinzel scenes. But, a problem I had with the Joker/Harley dynamic was that the Joker in the comics probably never would have tried to (semi-SPOILERS) rescue Harley from anything. She is his scapegoat if need be. The fact that he comes after her TWICE...I'm having a hard time believing that.

I did enjoy her costume though. I love different interpretations of Harley's outfit. I just feel sorry for Margot Robbie having to film an entire movie with that big 'ol wedgie those booty shorts were giving her.

Katana: I wish they would have given her more backstory. She has an amazing one. If you want to see her story I suggest watching season 3 of Arrow, they get really in depth and it is an emotional journey. In this movie though? Not so much. Most of the Squad got a backstory but her's was more like, "Oh, her husband is dead and her sword collects souls-OKAY! Moving on!" Her acting was amazing and her sword wielding skills were phenomenal though.

Killer Croc: Good move not making him CGI. I like the prosthetics.

Captain Boomerang: I. LOVE. CAPTAIN. BOOMERANG. Okay?? His character had so much awesome potential. You know how some action movies have that one character that can just lighten the mood during dramatic tension? The comedic relief? Could have been him! Was it? NO. AND he didn't even get a backstory! I wanna know more about him! Like, what's with the (SPOILER) pink unicorn? I need more Captain Boomerang.

Slipknot: No comment. I cannot give any opinions on him without spoiling a part of the movie. I will say, I wish he had more backstory. He just kind of randomly showed up with no explanation...

Diablo: Good. Borderline great, but not quite.

Enchantress: Good. Could have been better, but I'll stick with good. For a character like that from the comics to be brought onto the big screen they did very well.

Joker: Again, there was just something...lacking. I don't know what it was, but it didn't quite hit the Joker nail on the head. He wasn't really the "crazy" and "unpredictable" Joker we've come to know. More like a mob boss who randomly laughs really weird.

...Hmmm...

I kinda feel like I might have ripped this movie a new one...but I just want to say that I did enjoy it. I just noticed a LOT of flaws. I'm glad Harley Quinn finally made it to the big screen, along with Captain Boomerang, Katana, Deadshot, and the rest of the Squad.

And that soundtrack???? Holy balls. AMAZING.

Although it does kind of say something about a film when you're more excited about the soundtrack than the actual movie...

But that's just my opinion. YOU may go see the movie and think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. To each his own.

I give the movie a 6.5/10
