Report: Cyborg to Appear in ‘The Flash’ Solo Film

The fastest man alive and the, uh, robotiest man alive? (Sorry, I don’t know Cyborg’s tagline. Does he have one? I don’t think he’s ever gotten one. The robotiest man alive works, I think.)

A few months ago, Batman v Superman Deborah Snyder mentioned in an interview that we’d be seeing Cyborg (Ray Fisher) pop up in The Flash, the Scarlet Speedster’s upcoming solo film directed by Rick Famuyiwa and starring Erza Miller as Barry Allen. Now Variety says they’ve confirmed the news with their own sources. They don’t know how big Fisher’s role in The Flash will be, just that his appearance is designed to prime the pump for Cyborg’s own solo film, which is currently scheduled for release in 2020. (That’s four years from now, so who knows. A lot can change between then and now.)

This plan would certainly jive with DC’s (and before them Marvel’s) established pattern of introducing characters in small spotlight roles in other movies before spinning them off into their own films. Batman v Superman featured Wonder Woman ahead of her solo film in 2017 (along with brief cameos for Miller’s Flash and Fisher’s Cyborg, along with Jason Momoa’s Aquaman); Suicide Squad had another Miller cameo, plus a featured role for Jared Leto’s Joker, who presumably would be a centerpiece of a solo Batfleck film. If the tradition continues, Cyborg would have a small but flashy role, and maybe an action sequence or two, in The Flash.

There’s no reason that Cyborg couldn’t have a much larger role though. Come to think of it, a full-on superhero buddy movie could be pretty great, and something a little different from what we’ve seen so far. (Batman v Superman was like the opposite of a buddy movie. It was a buddy movie from the Bizarro universe.) The Flash opens in theaters on March 16, 2018.
