When Queens of the Stone Age covered Elton John's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" last month in Los Angeles, it wasn't just a random cover thrown in for fun. It turns out that it was an unofficial teaser of sorts for a newly announced tribute album. Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Elton John is set to be saluted by artists across multiple genres on the two-disc Revamp and Restoration release.

Queens of the Stone Age's take on "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" is the primary rock contribution on the collection, which also features contributions from Miley Cyrus, The Killers, Lady Gaga, Coldplay, Q-Tip, Mumford & Sons, Ed Sheeran, Willie Nelson, Chris Stapleton, Don Henley, Vince Gill and a wealth of others.

Restoration was Bernie [Taupin]'s project, and he’s a huge country fan,” John said in a statement announcing the project. “On Revamp, I wrote out a wish list of people that I would love and asked them, and to my surprise, most of them said yes, and we have quite an astonishing eclectic crew.” Queens of the Stone Age appear on the Revamp portion of the set. Elton John's Revamp and Restoration tribute release is due April 6.

Queens of the Stone Age performed "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" onstage in February at the Forum in Los Angeles with an assist from Villains producer Mark Ronson. It is not known if Ronson appears on the studio version of the song.

For those wondering about the Queens of the Stone Age connection to Elton John, remember that John was one of the special guests on the Queens ... Like Clockwork album. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer appeared on the song "Fairweather Friends" playing piano and lending backing vocals.

Josh Homme told the U.K.'s XFM at the time, "[Elton] was in a car listening to Them Crooked Vultures and his assistant said, 'You need to hear Queens.' The guy driving the car was an old roommate of mine! So all of a sudden, I get a phone call at my house on a Sunday. I picked it up and he said, 'Hello Josh, this is Elton.' I thought someone was messing with me."

The Queens leader continued, "He said, 'The only thing missing from your band is an actual queen!' I said, 'Honey, you have no idea.' When he walked in, he said, 'Do you have a ballad for me or what?' I said, 'No.' We tracked live for three hours, playing a rock and roll song. We just had a blast. He became part of our band. What really dawned on me was what a music lover, what a workaholic he is."

John revealed while guesting on Chelsea Lately that it was a very bizarre day for him, not only working with Queens of the Stone Age, but coming straight there from a session duetting with Engelbert Humperdink. "I went there and sang the duet with him and then I drove three blocks in the Valley and went from Engelbert to Queens of the Stone Age, which was a bit of a mindf---," stated Elton.
