Call me a softy…an idealist…or whatever you want, but I’m a big believer in that old “golden rule” thingy. I really think we should treat other people like we want to be treated. Regardless of your theological beliefs, I just think we should be nice to people. I try to live my life that way, never expecting anything in return…but today it paid off for me.

This morning on my way to work I decided to stop at McDonald’s on Main Street and get a biscuit. Shhh…don’t tell my wife…I’m supposed to be trying to save some money. So I was heading south on Main Street, about to turn right into McDonald’s. As I approached, there was another car facing me, waiting to turn left into the drive-thru line. So I just stopped short and let this lady in line. No big deal, I let people in all the time (see the Golden Rule again). She gave me a “thank you” wave and pulled in. I ordered my bacon, egg & cheese biscuit (yummy) and an ice water. My total was $3.01. I pulled up to the window with the exact amount in my hand. The window opened up, and before I could hand her my money, the nice McDonald’s employee handed me a receipt. She told me the lady in front of me paid for my food since I let her go ahead of me! How cool is that? I’ve heard of that type of thing happening, but it’s never happened to me. That just made my day…and on a Monday too!

I might just have to do the same type of thing for somebody in line behind me someday. Now I’m not suggesting that you have to pay for other people’s food all the time…or ever even. But I am suggesting that it wouldn’t kill you to be courteous and respectful to your fellow man (or woman), and to just do something nice for no particular reason.

Blame my parents, if you want, for raising me to have manners and to be courteous to other people. And you can blame me and my wife for doing the same with our kids. But those things are a big deal to me.

Okay…I’m scared of heights, so I’m gonna hop off of this soapbox now. Carry on.
