Netflix previously offered a quick look at its new Voltron series under a renewed agreement with DreamWorks, and the new Legendary Defender is already here. See the grand redesign for yourself in a first photo, and get details of the new crew!

USA Today formed the first official look at the new Voltron robot, which tries “to keep as much of that classic feel to it as we can,” according to co-executive producer Lauren Montgomery. This time around, the five members of the core cast will have more developed backstories for serialized storytelling, while a description reads:

Legendary Defender centers on five Earth teenagers — Keith, Lance, Hunk, Pidge and Shiro — who are thrown into the middle of an intergalactic battle and become the last line of defense for Arus and other planets against an evil alien force led by King Zarkon.

The series is also executive produced by Joaquim Dos Santos of Legend of Korra and Avatar fame, who also acknowledged an early version of the reboot turning out “really military and really serious, everything had chainsaws on it and was really bro’d out, and we just didn’t want that.”

The first thirteen 22-minute episodes will arrive on Netflix at an undetermined point later this year, while fans at WonderCon will get an early sneak peek of the first footage Friday.
