Tonight is the Evansville city edition of the 'National Night Out'. Held the first Tuesday in August, the festivities are not spread around town this year, but centralized at Wesselman Park starting at 6pm.

"National Night Out is going to be a little different this year. We're moving everything to Wesselman Park, consolidating to one location. I think it's going to be a great opportunity to really profile all the tools and all the programs that our public safety departments have," said Mayor Lloyd Winnecke. "National Night Out is great chance to celebrate the strength of our 44 neighborhood associations. It's also a great chance to send a strong message to the city of Evansville about how serious we are about public safety."

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT is designed to:

• Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness

• Generate support for, and participation in, local

anticrime programs

• Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community

partnerships

• Send a message to criminals letting them know that

neighborhoods are organized and fighting back
