Update at 7:30 AM

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet are out plowing and salting in all but a few counties at this hour.  Light snow flurries that started drifting across the region about midnight have turned into a steady snowfall that went from a dusting to about an inch of snow in the last hour at many locations.

According to the National Weather service, parts of the area can expect 8 to 12 inches of snow between now and about 4:00 p.m., today.  That will mean snowfall rates of about an inch an hour through the day, heavier in some l.

According to the Nat

At 4:00 a.m., CST, we have the following county-by-county report:

District 1 Paducah
Time: 4:00 A.M., CST

Air Temperature: 19
Road Temperature: 22
Comments: Light to moderate snow with bands of heavier snow at some locations, all 12 counties treating and plowing.

Plowing & treating: Ballard, Calloway, Carlisle, Crittenden, Fulton, Graves, Hickman, Livingston, Lyon, Marshall, McCracken, Trigg
District 2 Madisonville

Time: 3:40 A.M., CST
Weather: Snowing
Air Temperature: 20
Road Temperature: 24
Comments: In about the last hour Snow has arrived over most of District 2 and is quickly accumulating. Counties are reporting roads are already covered within a short amount of time. Crews are plowing and salting.

Treating: Daviess, McLean

Plowing & treating: Caldwell, Christian, Hopkins, Muhlenberg, Ohio, Union, Webster

Standby: Hancock, Henderson

If you plan to venture out today, please remember that the high rate of snowfall expected during this storm will make it difficult for highway crews to keep roadways clear.  State trucks and contractors will be running hard all day in an attempt to plow as many highways as possible before extreme cold temperatures through the week severely hamper snow and ice-fighting efforts.

The colder than normal temperatures during this snowfall is creating a light and fluffy snow that will be more likely to develop drifts as the storm progresses.  That will add an extra element of hazard to this event.

As a reminder, snow and ice-fighting chemicals have a greatly reduced impact below about 18 degrees Fahrenheit.  With overnight temperatures expected in the single digits and below zero through about Thursday night, the ability to improve driving conditions will be limit.  Motorists should avoid unnecessary travel and be prepared to deal with the extreme cold anytime they venture out.
