Korn’s Ray Luzier and Anthrax’s Charlie Benante Talk Drumming for ‘Metalhead to Head’

In the latest episode of Fuse’s ‘Metalhead to Head,’ Korn‘s Ray Luzier and ‘s Charlie Benante sit down and chat with each other (watch Part 1 above). Two great drummers shoot the breeze about everything from how they got started drumming to developing their style to being fathers. There’s a drum pad in between them, and throughout the interview they actually play various parts and demonstrate techniques.

They also talked about how their bands write material. Benante says, “Usually I’ll come up with a basic framework for a song and send it to everybody. If they like it, we get together, we arrange it, Scott (Ian) writes lyrics to it, we all get together again and write melodies, Joey comes in and it becomes it.”

“I’m a guitar player trapped in a drummer’s body,” Benante says. “There’s always a riff in my head at some point during the day… I’m always looking for that riff.”

As to what Korn are up to, Luzier said they are continuing ‘The Paradigm Shift’ tour. “We’re really happy to have Brian ‘Head’ Welch back in the band,” Luzier says. “I’ve always wanted since I got the gig, the four original (members) in front and me in the back. The chemistry is great now.” You can watch part two of the video below.

Luzier also talked about his side project KXM with dUg Pinnick (King’s X) and George Lynch (Lynch Mob). They released their self-titled debut album on Tuesday (March 11), and were profiled in the latest edition of HeAd’s KoRner on Loudwire. Benante says Anthrax continue to work on the follow-up to ‘Worship Music,’ and he’s trying to eventually do a comic book, and has a coffee related project in the works.
