If you’ve ever spent a significant amount of time around children, then you know there is no way of getting around watching kid’s shows. I have an 8 year old and a 5 year old, and I couldn’t begin to tell you how many hours I’ve spent watching their TV shows…many times it’s the same episode over and over and over again.

It was worse when they were younger. Shows like The Wiggles (I swear we went through 3 copies of one DVD from those Aussies), JoJo’s Circus, Rolie Polie Olie, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse among others, were always on our TV. Some of them were somewhat educational, others served as a babysitter, but they were all safe.

Well now that my kids are a bit older, we’ve moved on to different shows. And I’ve found a few shows that I actually enjoy watching…so much, in fact, that I catch myself watching these shows when my kids aren’t even around. Below is a list of my favorite “kid” shows, both animated and live action.

    iCarly

    Nickelodeon-live action

Without a doubt this one is my favorite. I’ll admit, I’m a little late getting on the iCarly bandwagon…we only starting watching it a few months ago. But luckily for us, there always seems to be an episode on somewhere. The show has been around for several years, so there are a bunch of episodes for us to catch up on. The main characters…Carly, Sam and Freddie…are just ok. They have their moments. But I get the biggest laughs from Spencer and Gibby. Spencer is Carly’s older brother and is very Jim Carey-esque. Gibby is just…Gibby. Watch the show and you’ll see what I mean.

    Phineas and Ferb

    Disney Channel-animated

Of course this one had to be near the top of my list…and I know I’m not alone in my thinking. I know several adults who enjoy this show, perhaps even more than their kids. Kids love it, for obvious reasons, and they throw in just enough “more mature” humor to keep the adults laughing too. It’s just brilliant!

    So Random!

    Disney Channel-live action

This one comes in a solid 3rd place. It’s a sketch show…kinda like a younger, shorter, Disney version of SNL. It features some really funny recurring characters and smart, clever skits. It features enough pop culture references to keep the kid’s attention, but also the type of humor that adults can appreciate too. I continue to be pleasantly surprised by this show.

    Young Justice

    Cartoon Network-animated

I’m a big fan of superhero-type shows. I’ll admit I don’t read comics, but I’ll watch the hell out of some shows and movies based on comic books. Young Justice follows teenage superheroes who are “sidekicks” of several Justice League members including Aqualad, Robin, Kid Flash, Superboy, Miss Martian and Artemis.

    The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes

    Disney XD-animated

Another animated superhero show rounds out my list. This show is about The Avengers, a group of superheroes that work together to battle the world’s supervillans. On this show, The Avengers consist of Iron Man, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Captain America, Ant Man, Wasp, Black Panther and Hawkeye. As you may have heard, in the 2012 we will get to see an Avengers movie. There have already been individual movies for Iron Man, Captain America, The Hulk and Thor. The Avengers movie will be in theatres in May 2012.
