New details and characters for Injustice 2 are flowing like water now that 2017 is picking up steam. After being silent on the game's roster since August of last year, NetherRealm Studios has divulged two new characters for the upcoming fighting sequel in nearly as many weeks. That can only mean even more character announcements are on the way, but I'm getting ahead of myself. First, we've got to talk about Black Canary bringing the noise in the latest gameplay trailer.

Dinah Lance's debut comes courtesy of IGN, which premiered the footage as part of IGN First. If you've been following the prequel comic, you'd know Black Canary works tightly with Batman's Insurgency. Fortunately for everyone involved, Black Canary gets a much-improved costume here in Injustice 2 from the pages of the comic. There she wore something more suitable for Superwoman from Earth 2, but in the game Canary's got a look that's a lot more "her." It actually looks like it borrows from a number of eras, including the current crop, but there's a bit of the New 52 in there mixed with some late '90s vibe, too.

You're not here to see how she looks though; you're here to see how she fights. Judging by this video, fans won't be disappointed. Canary makes great use of her melee training, mixing in some judo and other martial arts with a range of kicks, punches, and leaping attacks. She's got a few gadgets too, but it's her Canary Cry that serves as her best weapon. Though not quite as range-y as a projectile attack, the Cry does give her a bit of space to work through in combos. It's also the crux of her super, which may not be as elaborate or intricate as others in the game, but it definitely packs a punch.

If you look closely, you can also see a new battleground in Arkham Asylum in the background. Though Canary doesn't interact with it too much, there's clearly some environmental damage to deal out throughout the mental hospital. And who knows if some of the inmates might not get in the way of a good slugfest.

Injustice 2 will be out on May 16, 2017 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
