The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is asking state residents to help them identify areas in need of pothole repair as winter weather begins to take it's toll on state highways.

The Department sent the reminder in a press release on Tuesday detailing how potholes form over time:

Potholes form when water seeps into cracks on the roadway, freezes and then thaws. This process, combined with normal highway traffic and snow removal operations can loosens the pavement creating potholes.

If you see an patch of roadway in need of repair, contact INDOT by calling 1-800-279-5758, or fill out the online form on the "Report a Concern" page of their website.
