Dwayne Allen’s stay in Indianapolis came to surprising end on Wednesday when the Colts traded him to the New England Patriots.

ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter was the first to report confirmation of the deal.

Several NFL insiders, including NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Schefter reported late Wednesday afternoon the two teams were in talks about Allen with Rapoport the first to break news of the talks on Twitter.

Adam Schefter followed a short time later with a similar post.

Allen, who the team selected with the 64th overall pick in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft is coming off his second best season since joining the team, hauling in 35 passes for 406 yards and six touchdowns over 14 games.

His best year was his rookie season when he played all 16 regular season games, plus the team’s Wild Card game loss to Baltimore. In that season, he had a career high in receptions (45) and receiving yards (521) while scoring three touchdowns.

Stephen Holder who covers the team for the Indianapolis Star believes the signing of tight end Jack Doyle on Tuesday, the emergence of tight end Erik Swoope, and the fact this year’s draft will feature a deep tight end class led to Allen becoming expendable.

Others, including Mike Chappell of FOX 59, CBS 4, and noted this now means neither tight end drafted along with Andrew Luck in 2012 are part of the team.

However it was Zak Keefer of the Indianapolis Star who summed it up best in reference to the mindset of new General Manager, Chris Ballard.

No, sir. No he is not. And hopefully that means a return to the Colts brand of football fans expect when the season kicks off in September.
