How to Obtain a Hunting License in Indiana and Kentucky
With our first ever Outdoor Expo just around the corner (literally, it’s this weekend!) it’s got all of use here in a very outdoorsy kind of mood. If all of this talk of outdoors has you thinking “heck maybe I’ll try my hand at hunting! But how in the world do you go about getting a hunting license?” No worries, if you live in Indiana or Kentucky I’ve got you covered!
First you can buy your license online here.
But if that isn’t your speed here’s a few other ways to obtain a hunting license in Indiana:
1. In Person
Most licenses, including youth hunting licenses, are available from retailers, county clerks and most DNR properties throughout the state.
Non-resident licenses are available at the state’s Customer Service Center in Indianapolis and at most DNR properties. The DNR Customer Service Center is located in
Indiana Government Center South,
402 W. Washington St., Room W160
Indianapolis, IN 46204-2739
Customer Service Center hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., call (317) 232-4200,
Monday through Friday.
2. By Mail
Send your order with the following:
- Date of birth
- Include a copy of hunter education certificate or card if born after Dec. 31, 1986
- Complete address, city, state, zip, phone number
- Height, weight, color of hair and color of eyes
- Social Security number (this is mandatory)
- Specify the licenses including the season (i.e. deer for muzzleloader)
Send check, money order or credit card number and expiration date for licenses, made payable to Indiana DNR:
DNR Customer Service Center
402 W. Washington St., Rm. W160
Indianapolis, IN 46204-2739
Please allow 2 weeks for delivery. For more information, call the Indiana DNR Customer Service Center at (317) 232-4200. All licenses issued by the DNR are non-transferable and non-refundable.
1. You can get a permit online by going here.
Licenses and permits can be purchased throughout the state at about 900 locations, including country stores, some county clerks offices, local hunting and fishing businesses, and some chain stores that sell outdoor sporting goods. License vendor locations are listed here
3. By Phone
Licenses and permits can be purchased by phone at 877-598-2401 twenty-four hours a day. It is the caller’s responsibility to know what type of license or permit is needed before calling. Operators should NOT be relied upon to explain licensing requirements. If you are unsure what license or permit you need, refer to the License and Permit Descriptions section by clicking here, or contact Kentucky Fish and Wildlife at 1-800-858-1549. All Kentucky hunting and fishing licenses and permits, except a disabled license, elk lottery application and all youth licenses and permits, can be purchased over the phone for a small fee.
