Patrick Cowe, 24, of Evansville, never thought playing a game would give him the opportunity to travel internationally, but that is exactly what he is doing in April when he travels to Brussels, Belgium to compete in the MtG “Dragons of Tarkir ProTour.” MtG is a tradable card game (TCG) where you build your collection of cards by trading with other players, assembling decks of cards and battling an opponent and their deck.

Cowe started playing MtG in 2001. Those 14 years of playing paid off when he traveled to Memphis to compete in the MtG Grand Prix event. There he placed 5th out of more than 1,000 players and earned a cash prize and an invitation and airfare to the ProTour event in Belgium.

“Playing on the ProTour has always been a dream of mine,” Cowe said. “I can't wait to represent Evansville, Comic Quest and myself in Belgium.”
Cowe, who works at Comic Quest and runs all of their MtG official events, cannot begin preparing for the upcoming competition until the “Dragons of Tarkir” MtG set is released on March 27. At that time, he said he will be looking to other local players to help him get ready.

“I am putting a team together to help me test the standard format and draft,” he said.

Standard refers to a format of gameplay in which the two most recently released blocks, or sets, may be used in decks, along with the current core set. Drafting is a sanctioned method of constructing decks.

The Dragons of Tarkir ProTour will take place April 10-12 in Brussels, Belgium. The official hashtag on Twitter to join the discussion about the ProTour is #PTDTK. Players will compete for $250,000 in cash prizes, including $40,000 for the winner.
