Mayor Lloyd Winnecke has confirmed that the city of Evansville has taken a leap of faith in regards to finally building a downtown hotel and convention center. According to recent reports, the city’s redevelopment commission has now officially given the green light to start negotiations with Missouri-based HCW Development – responsible for similar projects in Branson, Missouri and Manhattan, Kansas.

The new hotel would act as a catalyst for further development, says Winnecke, who admits that if everything goes according to plan, construction is expected to get underway sometime this summer.

Development of a new downtown hotel and convention center (to be located next to the Ford Center) has been sought after for several years. Mayor Winnecke says that this project will lend itself to increasing state and regional convention business and get Evansville “back into the game.”
