A guilty pleasure is defined as “something that one enjoys despite feeling that it is not generally held in high regard.” I wanna take it a step further, and talk about music that you would be embarrassed to admit you enjoyed.

I hope you understand that I'm really going out on a limb here. I hope that you’ll still accept me despite some of my musical tastes. Just know that I certainly would never judge you based on your CD collection/Pandora channels/whatever. I'm a very accepting person. Just remember that.

You may already know that I was, and still am, a big fan of 80’s and 90’s R&B and hip-hop. That’s not my guilty pleasure though. I’m proud of that fact and not afraid to freely admit it. That was my favorite type of music in high school and college, before I really started getting into rock music. The fact is, I have a really wide range of musical tastes. I’m not ashamed to admit that I also dig contemporary Christian music, gospel, big band, opera and musical theater, among others. I think being a fan of all those genres can be pretty easily justified.

My musical guilty pleasure, however, doesn’t seem so easy to justify though, especially for a guy who’s worked in rock radio for almost 20 years. So here it is…I’m just gonna come out and say it. I’m actually nervous as I type these words...seriously. Here goes...I am a big fan of…BOY BANDS. Let me clarify that statement. I’m not a fan of all boy bands or even the concept of a boy band…I’m a fan of a few specific groups (they are in no way a ‘band’).

I’m admitting that I was a fan of New Kids On The Block. I have an older sister who was obsessed with NKOTB, and that meant I had no choice but to hear their music. And as a middle/high-schooler who was a decent singer and did all the choir stuff, I could appreciate what they did. And I’ll admit that I thought it would be pretty cool to do that for a living. And yes, even 25 years later I still really enjoy their music from back in the day. Maybe it’s a “trip down memory lane” type of thing, but I still dig it nonetheless.

Whew…that felt kind of liberating. Should I keep going? Okay. I’m also here to admit that I like both NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys. I mean you can’t deny that these groups can sing, and if you’re a fan of vocals and harmonies like I am, a lot of their music is pretty good. There is a bit of nostalgia with these groups too, considering I started dating my wife when these two groups were kinda hitting their peak. You see, I would serenade my lady with some of their cheesy boy band love songs (can't go wrong with the one below). It worked though, didn’t it?

So there it is…I’ve laid it all out there for the world to see. Now I’m not asking you to agree with me. I’m not asking you to change your mind about how you feel about these groups. I’m just asking you to accept me and love me! Can we still be friends? If it helps, I also still love Rage, Alice in Chains, Godsmack, Halestorm and all the rock I play on 103GBF.

Now it’s time for you to share with the rest of the group. Who or what is your musical guilty pleasure?
