‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Will Feature a New Avengers Lineup

The end of Avengers: Age of Ultron introduced a new lineup of Marvel’s A-game heroes, with Scarlet Witch, Falcon, War Machine and Vision joining the team. With all the new and upcoming heroes to be introduced in the MCU, it’s safe to assume that by the time Infinity War rolls around, that lineup will undergo a bit of a change once again, and according to directing duo Joe and Anthony Russo, that’s definitely the idea.

Appearing at Wizard World New Orleans over the weekend (via THR), Joe Russo told fans that he wants to see “some storytelling from some of the secondary characters,” and went on to explain how they’re building toward that in the MCU right now:

We’re focusing on that right now with Infinity War while we’re breaking into those movies, is which characters can we pull to the forefront who potentially haven’t had their own ‘A’ story arc to this point. I think you’ll see that the supporting Avengers are going to become primary Avengers.

That seems like a lot of juggling, but with Ant-Man now fully established and appearing in Captain America: Civil War, and with Captain Marvel and Black Panther’s solo films on the horizon (not to mention the Spider-Man reboot), it makes sense that we’d see some of the main superheroes like Cap and Iron Man go off to do their own thing while the newer guys step in. It also provides some diversity and refreshes the MCU without rebooting anything.

Russo reiterates this by adding:

Everything is finite, right? Nothing can last forever… It’s cyclical. Some new Avengers in [future movies] are going to become prominent and then maybe some Avengers might not be around anymore.

And with contracts and character arcs expiring, it makes sense that we might have to say goodbye to some of our favorites…eventually.

Captain America: Civil War hits theaters on May 6. Infinity War: Part I doesn’t arrive until May 2018, giving us plenty of time to prepare for some inevitable exits.
