Go Behind the Scenes with Joker and Harley Quinn in This ‘Suicide Squad’ Featurette
Listen, impressionable young men and women of the world, because this is important: you should not watch Suicide Squad and think that the Joker and Harley Quinn represent any kind of reasonable #RelationshipGoal. This is an abusive and possessive relationship, start to finish, and while there may be a more consensual love story scattered among the footage on the cutting room floor, we won’t know until we see it. This is a pretty important disclaimer to throw out there before we talk about this footage
‘Deadpool 2’ Is Rumored to Begin Production in January
This hasn’t been a great month for Ryan Reynolds and Deadpool 2. Between the departure of director Tim Miller and the loss of composer Junkie XL, the sequel to the breakout superhero hit has been losing momentum at a time where it should be locking in the moving parts for the next iteration of the film. That still hasn’t stopped 20th Century Fox from pushing forward with the sequel, which apparently will begin shooting as early as January 2017, production problems be darned.
New ‘Logan’ Photo Confirms the Identity of X-23
By now, you’ve all had a chance to watch, and re-watch, and re-re-watch, the trailer for Logan. What makes the film look so special — what separates it from the herd of superhero adaptations — is how little it looks like a superhero movie. If you knew nothing about Wolverine, you might think it’s just a fantasy or science-fiction story about an aging warrior tasked with looking after the future of his people. It’s an old tale in other genres but a breath of fresh air for a franchise typically more interested in fight scenes than pathos.
‘Rogue One’ Gets a Rumored Runtime
Sometimes I feel sorry for studio executives. You put so much time and money into making sure you run a tight ship — absolutely no leaks, meaning that you get to dictate when and where details about your new film are released to the public — and then one of your corporate partners accidentally posts a key plot point or a character photo on their website earlier than you intended, and all that hard work has been wiped away. It’s tough work keeping Hollywood’s secrets, especially for a movie as big as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
Marvel Still Has Plans for the Vampire Hunter ‘Blade’
About this time last year, rumors were flying that Marvel was trying to get some version of Blade off the ground. There were reports that Marvel had met with actor Wesley Snipes to discuss the possibility of a Blade 4; there were also reports that Marvel wanted to move forward with a Blade movie focusing on the vampire hunter’s daughter. Whatever the final product might be, Marvel clearly had some vague notion that Blade would be a factor in the future of the franchises.
Keanu Reeves Just Can’t Stay Retired in the ‘John Wick Chapter 2’ Teaser Trailer
These days it seems like every recognizable actor above the age of 50 is getting their own spin on the Taken franchise. As a result, not a lot of people batted an eye when it was announced that Keanu Reeves would be playing a retired contract killer in some mid-range action movie called John Wick. Imagine our collective surprise, then, when John Wick was not only not another Taken clone, but one of the best action movies of the decade. Fans were quick to clamor for another glimpse at the violent action and posh criminal underworld of the first film.
‘Wonder Woman’ Goes to War in These Brand New Leaked Photos
Ever since the Wonder Woman trailer blew the doors off of Comic-Con International, fans have been ready for another round of footage or trailers. Everything about the character lends hope to the idea that Wonder Woman will be the movie to right the sinking ship of the DC Cinematic Universe. And while it isn’t exactly the new trailer or huge photo spread we were hoping for, we do have a pair of new leaked photos to tide us over until the next official thing.
‘Spawn’ Creator Todd McFarlane Confirms a New Movie Is on the Way
With studios green-lighting every superhero property they can think of in search of the next big blockbuster franchise — just what the heck is a Max Steel anyways? — it’s kind of surprising that we haven’t seen a Spawn remake. Not only is Todd McFarlane’s character one of the biggest comic book characters to be created in the last twenty years, he is also one of the few prominent black superheroes (anti-superheroes?) to have already gotten his own movie adaptation. Diversity that comes with an R-rating? Just tell the suits that it’s Deadpool-meets-Black Panther and watch the dollar signs come rolling in.
Bryan Cranston Still Wants to Play ‘X-Men’ Villain Mr. Sinister
Every comic book studio has the thing they do that frustrates fans. Marvel refuses to give the Black Widow her own spin-off movie; the DC Cinematic Universe keeps selling us on a version of Superman that breaks necks and gets freaky in bathtubs; 20th Century Fox casts incredible actors and buries them beneath layers of makeup and prosthetics. The last one is particularly frustrating when a great actor all-but shouts that he’s cool with hours in the makeup trailer and they still don’t seem to have a place for him.
‘Jurassic World 2’ Director J.A. Bayona Confirms ‘Jurassic World’ Trilogy
About a year ago, Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow went on a Jurassic Park-themed podcast and talked about Universal’s plans to make his film the first in a trilogy of movies about dinosaur-induced mayhem. And while nothing really seemed to indicate that the creative team had switched gears since then, today we did finally get confirmation that a Jurassic World trilogy is still the plan going forward.
Orcs Talk Blood Magic in This Deleted Scene from ‘Warcraft’
Despite huge numbers in China, the future of the Warcraft franchise may hinge on how well it does on Blu-ray and DVD. To that end, Legendary Entertainment has started teasing the September 27 release date of the Warcraft Blu-ray with some new deleted scenes and special features. Clips like the one above also tease some of the extra footage that director Duncan Jones shot — and was forced to cut — during the Warcraft production process.
Seth Rogen Has His Eye on ‘Sausage Party 2’, More R-Rated Animated Movies
With Sausage Party setting an August box office record this past weekend, that sound you hear is doors across Hollywood opening for R-rated animated movies. This is probably an overdue development. Movies from studios like Pixar and Studio Ghibli have long been praised by people of all ages for the maturity of their themes; it was only a matter of time until someone with a proven track record and a bit of vision — a filthy, filthy vision — pushed animated movies right off into the deep end.
