Asking Alexandria’s Danny Worsnop Talks Spontaneous Songwriting, Day Drinking + More

Liz Ramanand, Loudwire

It’s going to be another fun summer for Asking Alexandria, as the band was just confirmed as one of the participants for the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival. With the news recently being revealed, frontman Danny Worsnop spoke with ‘Loudwire Nights’ host Full Metal Jackie about his preparation for the trek and he also opened up about his spontaneous songwriting approach and how his personal experiences affect the music. Check out Full Metal Jackie’s interview with Asking Alexandria’s Danny Worsnop below:

Loudwire Nights, Full Metal Jackie, with us on the show is Asking Alexandria’s Danny Worsnop. How are you?

I’m good.

Good to hear from you. You’ve done nothing but touring since I’ve met you. So, sounds like you’re busy.

Yeah, we have no idea what time off means.

[Laughs] Asking Alexandria is going to be part of the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival again this summer. Talking about the Mayhem festival, what is the most important thing a band needs to keep in mind about playing an outdoor summer festival?

Day drinking will kill you.

That’s good advice. So you’re saying, don’t drink during the day.

No, do! But just be very aware that you’re going to be hammered by the evening. Do you think I’d really ever tell anyone not to drink?

No, I do not. But there’s a science to it. If you’re going to be able to survive for the day, being out in the heat then performing, then partying at night. Maybe you should teach a class on that.

It’s usually good to get your day drinking done, because that removes the hangover from the day before, then take a nap half way through the day. A siesta. Then you can wake up refreshed, play your show, sweat out whatever toxins are left, then you can get drunk again for the evening.

So the nap, that’s key.

The nap is definitely the key, plus you’re way more awesome if you get drunk twice per day. It’s almost like you’ve lived twice already. You’re living twice as many days as anyone else. You’re getting twice as much out of life.

Danny, you’re not only a musician but also a photographer. Do you think visually as photographer and imagine lyrics as pictures when you’re writing songs?

I do not, no. Most of my lyrics are improv. I’ll be honest. I’m like a rapper.

You improvise when you’re in the studio or when you’re writing?

When I’m in the studio. I don’t write before hand.

So you don’t go in with prepared lyrics …

No. I have a very messed up process that leaves people very worried and concerned. I leave it to the very last second. The product always comes out, so that’s good.

So you’re that guy that everyone is worried about not having anything done when they come in.

Exactly. Some days I go in and just nothing comes to me. So I’ll sit there for a few hours, and say, ‘Yeah, it’s not happening today, guys.’ Then everyone goes home.

So just randomly you’ll come in …

Yep. Recording the last record, there was a period of two weeks where I didn’t even go in. I had nothing, I just wasn’t feeling it. But then, I showed up one day and gold came out.

What do you think inspires you? What happens on those good days you come in and suddenly happens?

Usually I had been on quite a binge, you see. I do like my drink. Yeah, something wild would happen and say, ‘This would make a great song!’ Then it does.

Loudwire Nights, Full Metal Jackie, Danny Worsnop from Asking Alexandria with us on the show tonight. Danny, how do the high and low points of your life affect your music? What is it about music that gives you the strength to survive those extremes?

You see, the worst thing about most of my highs are they are the low points. Because they’re not the highs I’m supposed to be having. That’s pretty much what all my music is about, is whatever I happen to be going through at the time. So, when I go through my high points I usually write songs like ‘Run Free’ where it’s very — has a positive message behind it. Then the other 364 days of the year I’m writing just really pissed off aggressive stuff.

What is the biggest advice you would give to young musicians starting out, looking up to you guys playing on stage?

Pick a different f—ing profession. [Laughs] It’s so much work. It is not the glamorous lifestyle that everyone sees on the outside.

You seem to be having a good time with it though.

I do say this while I’m on my iPad buying a house [laughs].

So you’ve never seen this house, but you’re buying it from your iPad?

Well, listen if you saw this thing it would change your life.

Is it in Los Angeles?

No, it’s in Dallas. I live in Dallas and L.A.

What is it about Dallas that you like?

All my friends are there. Plus Los Angeles is too — it gets a bit much for me, it’s too intense. I like to get away and relax.

It must be nice to have a place to get away too, to have that Dallas place.

Yeah.
