6 Non-Traditional Christmas Movies to Stream on Netflix This Season
From raunchy comedies, to horror and action, these five Christmas-themed films available to stream on Netflix buck the trend of the traditional holiday fare.
A quick search of the word, "Christmas" on the streaming movie service pulled up 11 pages worth of movies centered around the most wonderful time of the year. Most of which is your normal family-friendly fare such as ABC Family made-for-TV movies and the like, but these six come out of left-field to break the mold of what a Christmas movie is. If you're looking for something a little "outside the stocking" (see what I did there?), give these a try.
Santa Conquers the Martians
Plot: Martian children become obsessed with Earth television, particularly shows that promote how awesome Santa is. Upset that Earth children apparently have it so much better, a couple of Martian men travel to Earth to capture good ol' St. Nick so that he may spread the Christmas cheer to their people.
Plot: Zombies don't care what time of year it is, when they want to feast on brains, they will feast on brains. This horror-comedy centers around a hapless janitor going about his normal business of cleaning the bathroom while an office Christmas party takes place outside. Little does he know that everyone at the party has been turned into zombies. Trapped in a women's bathroom stall, the guy must fight his way out if he wants to survive. Hit the button below to see the trailer, but be warned, it is pretty graphic and gory.
Plot: In this South Korean film, two helicopters collide above a 108-story, luxury high-rise building during a Christmas party for its wealthy tenants and guests starting a deadly fire that instantly takes the festivities from jolly to ho-ho-horrifying. Think Die Hard without the terrorists — or Bruce Willis.
Elf Bowling The Movie: The Great North Pole Elf Strike
Plot: Based on the popular game, this 2007 animated feature tells the story of a pirate who is booted off his own ship during a mutiny by his crew, and winds up being discovered by elves who believe he is the chosen one who will become Santa Claus. When his pirate brother captures the elves, it's up to Santa to save them with his sweet bowling skills, or some such thing.
Plot: What if Santa wasn't a jolly old elf who delivers toys to children all around the world, but some sort of demon who has been buried in the mountains of Finland for hundreds of years? And what would happen if that demon were unearthed in the modern age? Those are the questions being answered in this 2010 horror-thriller.
Happy Naked Christmas
Plot: Take any American Pie or National Lampoon film, center it around Christmas time in Korea, and you have Happy Naked Christmas. According to Wikipedia (so take it for what you will), the film is about "Byung-ki, a taciturn village patrolman who helps out with trivial tasks like distributing promotional papers, though he dreams of fighting evil. One day, he runs into Min-kyong, an employee at the neighborhood bowling alley, and falls for her at first sight. However, his attempts to woo her go unnoticed. Meanwhile, Sang-doo, the boss of the local gang, also swoons over Min-kyong and vows to take her virginity on Christmas Eve." Merry Christmas, everybody!
