10 Ways To Make This Winter Break Special
Whether you’re on break from school yourself or you’re looking for something fun to do with your kids, Evansville is full of opportunities to avoid stir-craziness during the holidays.
The holidays are a good time to celebrate our own fortune, but also to remember the less fortunate. There are tons of organizations that could use your help over the holidays, and many people are in dire need of winter clothing, so consider contributing to a local clothing bank.
2. Play in the Snow
Use some of your free time outside and away from the TV/internet to have a snowball fight and build the best snowman on the block with friends or kids, then warm up with hot chocolate afterwards. There’s no age limit on having fun in the snow.
3. Meet Santa Claus
Santa has engagements all over town this season, so there’s plenty of time for your kids to visit him before Christmas. He will be at the Eastland Mall through December 24th, the free Breakfast With Santa hosted by the St. Vincent’s Center for Children and Families on December 7th, and the West Side Nut Club’s Santa Land from December 14th-15th.
4. Tour the Reitz Home
The Reitz Home Museum is decorated for its 34th Annual Victorian Christmas this year, so stop by and see the gorgeous decorations, and maybe get a few ideas for your own house. The Candelight Tour takes place on December 13th.
5. Visit the Fantasy of Lights
The Fantasy of Lights in Garvin Park is always worth driving by, and the event helps fund the Easter Seals Rehabilitation Center.
6. Visit an Art Show
The Tri-state Art Guild is holding its Winter Show this year from December 1st to March 1st. This art exhibit is free and open to the public.
7. Watch a Gingerbread House Competition
The only admission required to see Aurora’s Midwest Gingerbread House Competition at The Centre is a non-perishable food item. You can watch professional and amateur teams build the best and tastiest-looking gingerbread houses you’ve ever seen.
8. See a Show
Bill Cosby will be performing on December 7th in The Centre, Mamma Mia! will be returning to The Centre on December 13th, and the Evansville Ballet will be presenting The Nutcracker on December 14th. The family-friendly Candy Cane Express Concert takes place on December 7th.
9. Make a Christmas Card
Show friends and family your sense of humor by coming up with a Christmas card worthy of Awkward Family Photos. Don’t forget to dress up your pets.

Use as much of this time off as possible to connect with your family or friends and make lasting memories. After all, this is what the holidays are for.
